The Suzuki SFV650, formerly known as the Gladius, is a delight on the road – fun and zippy. In case you haven’t noticed, Suzuki’s fun-loving Gladius is back in the company’s lineup. You might’ve missed that fact for good reason, because it’s no longer called Gladius - it’s now simply called SFV650. The Gladius, a Latin word for a small sword used by Roman foot soldiers, made its debut in 2009 right when the recession was clicking up into sixth gear and by 2012 it had inconspicuously disappeared from Suzuki’s arsenal. Luckily, it has resurfaced again but without much fanfare or the Gladius moniker. The Gladius, or SFV650, re-emerged in 2013 (as well as in 2014) much like it was in 2011 but with a new coloring. You might remember the original Gladius with its distinctive blue and white color scheme. Now it is, in stark contrast, mostly black and, in our opinion, it doesn't quite stand out as much. The 2013 version is all black while the 2014 SFV650 received some coloring touches, getting a more overall gray/black tone and a distinctive red frame that now highlights its unique steel trellis design. (The SFV650 we tested was a 2013 model, which is nearly identical to the 2014 model sans the red paint and a more compact and lighter fuel pump. According to Suzuki’s specs, the 2014 model is about a pound or so lighter than the 2013 version. We recently got the chance to spend some quality time with the SFV650 and again became quite attached to the spunky little machine before we had to return it to its rightful owner. In fact, they – our friends at Suzuki - had to pry our fingers off it after receiving more than one, okay, maybe five or six, ignored emails demanding its return. Some motorcycles are just worth fighting to keep. Fun. That’s the single best word to describe the SFV650. Two words would be – fun and economical. Priced at $7999 for the 2013 and $8149 for the 2014, the SFV650 isn’t that far out of reach for most people who are in the market for a full-size, hard-working yet fun and, not to mention, exotic-looking motorcycle for the street, and the SFV is rather inexpensive to operate, its two medium-sized cylinders sucking just enough fuel to get you upwards of 55 miles per gallon, depending how much fun you and your right wrist are having. You can cover a lot of ground with its 3.9-gallon tank. Plus, it has no problems being fed cheaper 87-octane fuel, despite its somewhat high 11.5:1 compression ratio. There’s no sticker on the tank saying you must get the good (expensive) stuff. That’s a big deal. With the SFV650 you get an exotic-looking bike without the exotic price tag. The SFV’s DOHC 90-degree V-twin motor, with dual spark plugs and four valves per cylinder, delivers excellent power for just 645cc, via its 3.19-inch bore and 2.46-inch stroke configuration, offering up a good mix of high-revving excitement, midrange pull and low-to-mid torque to keep things interesting at all times. If you feel like just plonking around from stop sign to stop sign or from turn to turn, no problem, just short-shift it through its six gears, or if you’re feeling a bit naughty, open‘er up and let the R’s stretch out a bit. The SFV responds well to both moods. Throttle response is also excellent. The SFV’s 39mm Suzuki Dual Throttle Valve fuel-injection system with 10-hole injectors deliver a smooth and steady stream of fuel to both cylinders at all throttle openings and rpm’s. We felt no glitches, burps or bogs. The bike has plenty of power for commuting on the freeways. In fact, the SFV is quite comfortable droning along at 65-80 mph. There is no sign of laboring from the motor at these speeds, nor do you feel much in the way of excessive buzzing, even approaching its 10,500 redline. And it accelerates nicely while already at speed. For a somewhat small displacement, the SFV is remarkably smooth and downright comfortable. The only thing that isn’t comfortable is the seat. The slight forward slant, narrow-at-the-tank profile and thin padding leave a lot to be desired. You’ll be feeling it before the one-hour mark. But it mainly needs just better padding. Suzuki does offer as an accessory a taller seat for the SFV for $169.95, as well as a gel seat for $298.95. Ergos, however, are right on the mark. It’s not a very large motorcycle but one of our taller test riders, who hovers just over six feet, felt right at home on the bike. It has a fairly straight up and down and relaxed seating position that helps make up for the yucky seat. Another plus is the bike’s rather low 30.9-inch seat height. Combine that with its fairly narrow profile, getting both feet firmly planted on the ground isn’t an issue and shouldn’t be for most people. First-time or entry-level riders won’t feel too intimidated by the SFV’s small-ish stature or its user-friendly motor. Control levers are easy on your hands and fingers. Despite being cable actuated and not hydraulically actuated, clutch pull is rather light, smooth and positive, and gear changes are simple, easily accomplished by nothing more than a slight tap on the lever with your left foot, down or up, through all six gears. The SFV feels very light and responsive at the helm. Suzuki claims that it weighs just over 440 pounds wet. It handles well and is quick to react when it comes to rider input. Despite its compact size and somewhat short 56.9-inch wheelbase, and with its 25-degree and 4.09-inch rake and trail, the SFV feels solid and stable at speed, yet is ready to react instantaneously to your commands. The bike is very responsive. The tubular handlebars have just the right amount of leverage for effortless corner entries. Just flick it in and enjoy. The Suzuki is just as competent on the twisties as it is on the open highways, in fact, maybe even more so. Braking power is good at both ends but not spectacular. The feel of our test bike’s dual-disc front brake was a little soft, but overall the front and rear brakes are good and plenty sufficient. The SFV is not fitted with an anti-lock braking system, which, if it had, would have certainly added to the cost and weight of the bike. To be honest, we did not miss ABS one bit on this particular bike. The SFV’s suspension didn’t do anything to wow us. The fork is overly soft and doesn’t soak up the harsh jolts and square-edge bumps all that great. Overall ride is just okay at best – in general, a little harsh and springy - and there isn’t much you can do about it. Neither the rear shock nor the front fork offer any kind of damping adjustability, just some spring preload. The lack of suspension performance isn’t a game changer by any means, but is something worth noting. The SFV comes with a simple yet effective compact instrument pod. It’s part analog and part digital and looks modern just like the droopy headlamp that hangs in front of it. Not only does the headlamp look modern, it also throws plenty of good useable light ahead of you. You’ll seek out the back roads on your ride into work on the SFV650. Overall, we’re glad to see “the sword” back in Suzuki’s arsenal. The Italianesque-looking machine is a head turner, offers sporty performance and, best of all, is just plain enjoyable to ride. You’re just not going to find too many other bikes that offer as much in the way of performance, fun and versatility for the price – as well as operating price – than the Suzuki SFV650. License AA The possible rebuke of divisive identity politics in the Quebec election campaign will be misread by some as a fatal blow to separatism. Instead, it should be seen as the death of an enduring myth that Quebeckers can be easily slotted into two tidy categories and led anywhere based solely on whether they want their province to be a country or not. Thousands of students marched in Montreal to oppose what organizers describe as the Parti Quebecois' role in increasing the cost of public services, education and electricity. Even a surprising Parti Quebecois landslide victory on Monday will do little to revive the immediate one-term fortunes of the Quebec independence movement, however. The PQ has laid none of the groundwork and even a majority led by Pauline Marois would have a hard time calling a referendum after a campaign in which she promised not to hold a vote, unless Quebeckers rise up to demand one. The more likely outcomes – defeat, or even a narrow victory repeating the 2012 PQ minority result, according to recent polls – should provoke soul-searching for a party that gambled heavily on a narrow and traditional interpretation of Quebecois identity that made tatters of the party’s left wing and its reputation among Quebec minorities. A PQ loss “will trigger a time of reflection that will inevitably lead to a change of mentality,” said Jean Dorion, a founding PQ member who still wants Quebec independence but walked away from the party in 2012 over identity politics. The former head of the Societe Saint Jean-Baptiste de Montreal wrote a book last fall on how to build a secular-but-inclusive Quebec. “I think they will be defeated on Monday,” he said. “Generally what doesn’t work leads to a change of direction. This will be one of those moments. The Liberal and PQ campaigns are spending the weekend frantically rolling and flying across the province, and each trajectory tells a story on where they believe they are headed. Ms. Marois returned to Lac-Megantic, where her swift intervention after last summer’s horrific train blast marked the highlight of her tenure as premier and the start of a long climb in her government’s popularity. She once again exposed a compassionate side buried in one the most negative campaigns in decades. “I still have a bit of a lump in my throat,” Ms. Marois said in recalling last summer’s tragedy. “I think we took care of the people here. We tried to be very cautious not to exploit this event and that is what we are doing today, doing it in a very sober manner. The Liberals, who lost by only four seats in 2012, are hitting more than two dozen ridings – almost all of them currently in the PQ camp. “We’re going to those places because politics are changing in Quebec,” said Liberal Leader Philippe Couillard. “The political tectonic plates are shifting. I feel like there’s a turning point happening in Quebec politics. Young people are more interested in the values of openness, confidence, inclusion than values that are about mistrust and exclusion as we’ve seen in recent months. Whether Quebec is undergoing a fundamental shift remains to be seen. But what is clear is that the most aggressive electoral push based on identity politics since Quebec’s most intense language wars failed to capture popular imagination. A proposed charter of values that garnered support among francophones for the promise to squeeze displays of religiosity out of the public service turned out to be the least concern of many Quebeckers. Poll after poll showed they wanted nothing to do with identity politics or a referendum and were really worried about the province's economy, public finances and health care system. Quebeckers who liked the idea of driving religion further from their lives turned away when faced with the political realities behind the plan, and the ignorant camp followers that came with it. Many Quebeckers who supported the charter discovered a referendum might follow when star candidate Pierre Karl Peladeau raised his fist and said he wanted a country. “PQ strategists forgot one thing. Many people who are afraid of a scarf or a kippa are also afraid of their shadow,” Mr. Dorion said. “One fist in the air and the word ‘referendum,’ and they bolted. Unease built as Quebeckers saw outrageous comments by charter supporters accusing Jews of conspiring to collect a kosher tax and musings that Muslims may some day drive women from swimming pools. Then they learned a stark reality the PQ went to great lengths to avoid admitting: People, mostly scarf-wearing Muslim women, would lose good jobs as nurses, teachers and daycare workers. Mr. Dorion, who founded an organization dedicated to promoting independence with a more open spirit to minorities, said the PQ leadership arrogantly pursued a course “contrary to the essential values of our civilization: Respect for evidence, freedom of conscience, and pluralism. Comment, Blog about Share CINCINNATI (AP) — A federal judge said Friday that he will order Ohio to recognize out-of-state gay marriages, a move that would strike down part of the state’s ban on gay marriages but stop short of forcing it to perform same-sex weddings. Judge Timothy Black announced his intentions in federal court in Cincinnati following final arguments in a lawsuit that challenged the constitutionality of the marriage ban. “I intend to issue a declaration that Ohio’s recognition bans, that have been relied upon to deny legal recognition to same-sex couples validly entered in other states where legal, violates the rights secured by the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution,” Black said. “(They’re) denied their fundamental right to marry a person of their choosing and the right to remain married. Black said he’ll issue the ruling April 14. The civil rights attorneys who filed the February lawsuit did not ask Black to order the state to perform gay marriages, and he did not say he would do so. Gay marriage is legal in 17 states and the District of Columbia. Federal judges have also struck down bans in Michigan, Utah, Texas, Oklahoma and Virginia, and ordered Kentucky and Tennessee to recognize out-of-state gay marriages, though stays have been issued pending appeals. Pam and Nicole Yorksmith, a Cincinnati couple who married in California in 2008 and have a 3-year-old son, were among the four couples who filed the lawsuit challenging the gay marriage ban and said Black’s comments Friday gave them validation. “It also validates to our kids that we’re bringing into our marriage that their parents are recognized by the state that we live in, and that’s extremely important,” Pam Yorksmith said. “We’re teaching kids of future generations that all families are different and just because our family doesn’t look like your family doesn’t mean that ours shouldn’t be recognized. Nicole Yorksmith is pregnant through artificial insemination with the couple’s second child and is due in June. The Cincinnati-based legal team asked Black to declare Ohio’s gay marriage ban is “facially unconstitutional, invalid and unenforceable,” and indicated that following such a ruling, the window would be open for additional litigation seeking to force the state to allow gay couples to marry in Ohio. “This is a serious problem at the basic level of human dignity,” civil rights attorney Al Gerhardstein told Black during Friday’s arguments. “That human dignity is denied by the way Ohio treats same-sex couples. This is central to our whole commitment as a nation to equality. Dan Tierney, a spokesman for Ohio’s attorney general, said the state will appeal Black’s order when it comes out but declined to comment further. Attorneys for the state argued that it’s Ohio’s sole province to define marriage as between a man and a woman, that the statewide gay marriage ban doesn’t violate any fundamental rights, and that attorneys improperly expanded their originally narrow lawsuit. “Ohio has made its own decision regarding marriage, deciding to preserve the traditional definition,” state’s attorneys argued in court filings ahead of Friday’s hearing. They argued that striking down the law would “disregard the will of Ohio voters, and undercut the democratic process. Black didn’t say why he made the announcement on his ruling before he issues it. But by stating his intention ahead of his ruling, Black gave time for the state to prepare an appeal that can be filed as soon as he does. The state can also work on asking Black for a stay in his ruling pending appeal. Gay rights organizations praised Friday’s development. “It’s only a matter of time before marriage equality is the law of the land in not just Ohio, but every corner of America,” said Chad Griffin, president of the Washington, D.C.-based Human Rights Campaign. “The court’s forthcoming action shines a bright light on the fact that same-sex couples are denied their 14th Amendment guarantee of equal protection,” said Ian James of FreedomOhio, a group working to have voters overturn the state’s ban as soon as this fall. Phil Burress, who chaired the 2004 effort to ban same-sex marriage and is the president of Citizens for Community Values, said his group is prepared to fight any ballot initiative to repeal the ban. He said he’s confident the Cincinnati-based 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals and other courts will overturn Black’s coming order and the seven recent rulings overturning statewide gay marriage bans elsewhere or ordering states to recognize out-of-state gay marriages. “The domino effect you’re talking about is going to be short-lived,” he said. “This is not the will of the people. This is a Hail Mary pass to get everyone forced to recognize same-sex marriage by having the courts do their dirty work. The lawsuit originally only asked Black to force Ohio to recognize out-of-state gay marriages on birth certificates. Attorneys later expanded it for a broader and more significant ruling, a move that irked the state’s attorneys. “It could require a sea change in the way numerous government agencies and departments (not parties to this litigation) fulfill their duties,” they wrote in court documents, referring to a ripple effect that could encompass Ohio statutes on insurance, mortgages, child guardianship and property. The lawsuit built on the success of another one also filed by Gerhardstein that sought to force Ohio to recognize out-of-state gay marriages on death certificates. In December, Black granted that request, saying that Ohio’s ban on gay marriage demeans “the dignity of same-sex couples in the eyes of the state and the wider community. by liz lee For every 1,000 shares an investor had bought in Tan Chong Motor Holdings Bhd (TCM) in 1973 and held it for forty years, he would have pocketed some RM3,005 purely in cash dividends. Apart from cash, the investor would have also got free shares in a Hong Kong-listed company and two other local companies during a de-merger in 1999. This is amidst the tough business environment in the automotive industry where companies producing national cars had for long an advantage over non-national car manufacturers. Tan Chong Motor, one of the oldest listed automotive companies in Malaysia, has not only survived the downturn of three economic cycles but also the introduction of a more competitively-priced national car which ate into Tan Chong’s market share in the second half of 1980s. Along the way, it also managed to iron out a family tussle for control over the company reins, away from the ogling public eye. Time and again, Tan Chong Motor has kept its appeal as an automotive stock with a reliable business philosophy and a financial performance that overtakes itself almost every year. Last year, the company recorded a net profit of RM250.95mil, doubly higher than RM164.66mil in the 2012 financial year. This, however, is helped by a one-off item in revaluation of the properties, an executive in the company said. The bump in the financials was due to a revaluation exercise on its property assets that resulted in a RM591.4mil surplus, trimming down its net gearing to 0.42x in the 2013 fourth quarter versus 0.56x in the previous quarter. “Tan Chong International Ltd (TCIL) and TCM made huge gains this year due to the bump in their revaluation reserves. The Tan Chong group has more than 100 undervalued properties and the reason for revaluation is to bulk up shareholders’ funds to support increasing business,” the executive says. He adds that the group employs a strategy of consolidating and strengthening its balance sheet in one year, and investing in growth the following two years. “We don’t expect a repeat of this record performance this year. The markets are tough especially in Malaysia where TCM derives the bulk of its sales apart from Vietnam and Myanmar,” he says, grounded in his outlook for 2014. “However the group is on the path to achieving sales of 100,000 vehicles for the entire group by 2016. Now they are doing close to 60,000. He notes that 80% of TCM sales is still in Malaysia where “car prices are supposed to come down, causing people to delay making decisions”. That said, TCM is on track to achieve sales of 100,000 by 2016 after the group introduces new models in 2015 and 2016, the intended growth years. Its sales volume is about 60,000 now. TCM has come a long way from 1985 when its market share dropped from 30% to a mere 3% after national carmaker Proton came into the local automotive space. At their height, Proton and Perodua had 80% market share, won over by their attractive prices. Non-national cars have been making a steady comeback since, where its 16% market share in 1999 has gradually grown to 47% last year. Tan Chong group is one of those who have shown resilience and tenacity. The executive believes that demand for non-national cars will continue to grow “but there will be years when there is some consolidation like 2014. TCM is parent company, Tan Chong Consolidated Sdn Bhd’s (TCC) main earnings driver and contributes a bigger portion than those of its sister companies. But it is not the sole star under the TCC stable. Its sister companies - APM Automotive Holdings Bhd, Warisan TC Holdings Bhd and Hong Kong-listed TCIL - have also proven their worth, collectively securing a year of record achievements in 2013. These three sister companies were listed in 1999, after demerging from TCM. APM, Warisan TC and TCIL have since given out total dividends of RM204.60, RM117.30 and HK$89.50 respectively, for every 100 shares held. Note that when these companies demerged from TCM, the shareholders were given free 300 TCIL shares, 30 APM shares and 10 Warisan TC shares for every 100 shares they held. Last year, the return on equity from all four companies were in the double digit area - TCM giving 10.7%, APM 13.7%, Warisan TC 11.52% and TCIL 20.35%. In 2009, the Tan family settled the family boardroom tussle where Datuk Tan Heng Chew was at logger heads with his unclde Datuk Tan Kim Hor. Heng Chew’s father Tan Sri Tan Yuet Foh and Kim Hor were the founders of the Tan Chong group in the 1970s. An industry observer says the nearly decade-long family board tussle through the 2000s resulted in an overhang on the stock as investors tip-toed around the stock, anticipating a selldown by the Tan families. Another industry observer close to the Tan family says the performance of the companies’ share prices were never a concern. “For the Tan’s, it is about being in the driver’s seat of their conglomerate and defending that position. On why the demand for the shares spiked as soon as the family tussle was over, the observer said “big decisions can now be made without one side vetoing the other. “People wanted to buy the shares without getting dragged into the feud, and also some family members also wanted to buy some shares,” the observer says. To recap, the dispute began in 2001 when Datuk Tan Kim Hor and his family filed a petition against Heng Chew’s family in High Court to wind up TCC, to have the assets in the company distributed in specie. Heng Chew’s family had controlled a 55.4% stake in TCC, while Kim Hor’s had 44.6%. In turn, TCC had directly owned 46.51% in TCM and 45.34% in TCIL. Heng Chew had moved to defend his family’s stake in TCC, striking out a notice of motion against the petition and then, not supporting Kim Hor’s re-appointment as a TCM director in the 2002 AGM. The Heng Chew team also beefed up their stake in ultimate holding company TCC to 75% when some members of the Kim Hor team sold out. However, the Tan families decided to settle their feud outside the courtroom. The various suits were withdrawn and the feud settled through an arrangement that TCC will maintain an effective stake of about 33% in the listed companies and release the rest progressively to exiting minority shareholders in TCC over five years, by 2014. The families has since gone their separate ways, save for Kim Hor’s eldest son Kheng Leong, a Singapore citizen, who is the executive director in TCIL. It was reported that Kheng Leong, with his brother Kang Leong was not in favour of exposing the family feud in court in 2001. The feud is past and buried, and the companies under the Tan Chong conglomerate have continued to flourish. TCC now holds 42.93% in TCM, 39.88% in APM, 38.4% in Warisan TC and 35.06% in TCIL. Based on the market capitalisations of these companies at RM3.57bil, RM1.21bil, RM220mil and HK$6.44bil (RM2.72bil), TCC is valued at RM3.05bil. Mitrajaya bags RM277. E&O share price rises to RM2. The WHOA at 1 Across, made even more Keanu-y by the “Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure” clue “That’s crazy, dude!” got Mr. Reeves stuck in my head while I tackled the northwest corner.This cracklingly fresh puzzle has a whopping 14 new entries, although AMBERS has not been seen since before Will Shortz took over and is clued terribly: “One may prefer them to blondes”? Really? How many people do you know who have AMBER hair? Eyes, maybe.Separate and apart from AMBERS, though, I really liked LEGALIZE IT (just for the daringness of the entry/clue pairing alone) which hilariously crosses REEFER, MAKE BANK, PRIMAL URGE (even if I don’t quite get the clue), HABANERO, I DO BELIEVE, FIONA APPLE, SEX SYMBOL (where are the male SEX SYMBOLS in the puzzles? I’m lodging a formal complaint here), SHE SAID YES and PATTY CAKE.Clue of the Day for me was 14 Down’s “Forever in the past?” which leaves out the comma to misdirect us, but which is actually the suitably archaic and poetic ETERNE.A lot of work, this one, mostly due to some names I either didn’t remember or recognize (there is little difference to me these days), but a worthy opponent on a Saturday. Ashton Anderson: A quick intro: I’m a Ph.D student in computer science. James and I met during our undergrads at McGill University, where he first introduced me to crosswords and, later, to the idea of constructing them. I never thought I’d be a “crossword person,” but it has turned out to be a weirdly perfect combination of many things I love (language, pattern, misdirection, etc.) I think of constructing as a craft, or a minor form of art, and it makes for a great creative outlet for me.When James and I collaborate, I usually start off with the first corner (seeded with an entry from James), then pass it off to James who fills in the opposite corner (seeded with one of my entries), and we try to design the grid so that the 3rd and 4th corners can then be finished simultaneously. This is because I’m a hopeless puzzle perfectionist and love the freedom of the first corner (but my solo output is mostly a folder full of first corners), whereas James is much better at making shrewd compromises to squeeze great corners out of constrained situations — I open, he closes. I did the top half of the puzzle (seeded by LEGALIZE IT) and James did the bottom (seeded by SHE SAID YES, although I was thinking of the ecstatic phrase.) I’m especially excited about this one because it has a lot of answers that feel very “us”, like I GOT YOU, MAKE BANK, DUCHAMP, and PATTY CAKE.James Mulhern: Despite almost ruining our friendship (PEELINGS led to a heated debate), it was a blast making this puzzle. Ashton’s NE corner in particular is a beaut, with LEGALIZE IT crossing REEFER, and my favorite clue, [Drive to drink, e.g.] for the super-fun PRIMAL URGE.Speaking of cluing, our cluing method for our collaborations involves each of us writing a set of clues without talking to each other, then brainstorming as we merge them. That way, we get two perspectives — that is, assuming we don’t have the same clue … and that Ashton actually manages to finish his (3+ months to write clues is not unusual for him!)And finally, a huge thank you to Will Shortz for agreeing to run this puzzle today. The Sea Dogs improve to 2-0 on the young season. Blake Swihart broke a 1-1 tie in the sixth inning with a line drive single to center field off reliever Ryan O'Sullivan to plate Deven Marrero. Sean Coyle added a RBI single scoring Carlos Rivero and Henry Ramos scooted home on a throwing error by second baseman Albert Cartwright. Keith Couch (1-0) tossed 5.2 innings allowing one unearned run on six hits to earn the win. Couch struck out six and walked a batter. He retired the final nine batters he faced. Last season Couch led the Sea Dogs in wins with 11. Coyle (2-for-4, R, 2 RBI) gave the Sea Dogs a 1-0 lead in the second inning when he smacked his first Double-A home run off Severino Gonzalez. Reading tied the game in the bottom of the third when Couch issued a one out walk to Zach Collier. After a double by Cam Perkins, Kelly Dugan singled and Collier scored on a throwing error by Sea Dogs left fielder Bo Greenwell. Noe Ramirez relieved Couch and fired 1.1 innings allowing one hit and striking out two. Miguel Celestino pitched a perfect eighth inning with two strikeouts. The porcine epidemic diarrhea (PED) virus was first officially detected in the United States in May 2013. Now it is active in 27 of the nation's 50 states. The contagious virus is not transmissible to humans and poses no risk to food safety, assures the US Department of Agriculture (USDA). But it causes diarrhea and vomiting in pigs and is fatal in piglets. Fearing the virus will produce a shortfall in pork supplies during barbecue season, some processors have stocked up their warehouses, sending prices higher. Prices for pork for delivery in April have soared more than 45 percent on the Chicago Board of Trade since the beginning of the year. On Friday, the futures contract slipped two cents to close at $1.23 a pound (0.45 kilogram). The USDA does not have official data on the number of pigs infected by the virus. But according to Rich Nelson of the agricultural market research and trading firm Allendale, as many as seven million pigs were hit since last May, or about six percent to eight percent of production. With some 113 million pigs sent to the slaughterhouse in 2012, the United States is the world's second-leading pork producer behind China. Stepped-up precautionary measures have been taken in a bid to contain the spread of the virus, such as making sure trucks are spotlessly clean or limiting the number of outside visitors to farms. The virus is expected to become less contagious when temperatures climb. Some fear the supply of pork products will be drastically reduced during the summer season of BLT sandwiches -- made with bacon, lettuce and tomato -- and above all of barbecues, which are fired up full blast from Memorial Day, the last Monday of May, through Labor Day, the first Monday of September. "The peak of PED was four or five weeks ago," which means that the worst impact probably will be in June or early July, said Nelson, director of research at Allendale. "During those months, hogs slaughter will be 10 percent to 15 percent lower. Even though it is difficult to predict precisely the effect on the prices of ham, chops and sausages in stores, analysts are saying it will be a hog-sized jump. Nelson sees prices climbing as much as eight percent. "Sticker shock" could be damped by two factors, said Jason Roose, vice president of US Commodities, a grain and livestock investment firm in West Des Moines, Iowa, in the heart of the nation's Farm Belt. For one, pork producers are benefiting from the lower cost of corn to feed their animals, and are selling fatter pigs that are six pounds heavier than a year ago, weighing 282 pounds on average. And the second factor is price-point pressure on consumers, the commodities analyst said. "If some of the pork prices are getting high enough that it compares to lobster prices, you buy lobster or you buy less ribs," Roose said. Consumers would be unlikely to turn to beef, whose prices have shot up in recent months due to the drought in several big cattle-raising states including Texas.
