WASHINGTON — The Corn Belt states leaned more toward soybeans than the national average in the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s prospective planting estimates. The USDA estimated a record high 81.5 million soybean acres for this year, up 6 percent from 2013, and projected corn at 91.7 million acres, 4 percent less than last year. However, Corn Belt members Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota and Wisconsin indicated a 7.75 percent increase in soybean acres and about a 3.3 percent drop in corn area. North Dakota farmers indicated the biggest shift with a 22 percent increase in soybean areas and 13 percent reduction in corn. Other states with double-digit increases in soybean acres were Nebraska, 13 percent; Michigan, 11 percent; Wisconsin, 11 percent; and Minnesota, 10 percent. Iowa and Kansas are not only increasing soybean acres by 3 percent and 8 percent, respectively, but also corn area by 3 percent and 2 percent. Of course, despite the shift, the Corn Belt still keeps its name with 10.75 million more corn than soybean acres. Beyond the Corn Belt, Massachusetts and Utah will see the largest percentage increases in corn acreage at 13 percent and 11 percent, respectively. Mississippi is projected to have the largest decrease in corn area, dropping from 860,000 acres in 2013 to 580,000 acres this year, a 67 percent reduction. Several southern states also are turning more to soybeans. Texas will see the largest jump in soybeans, increasing 38 percent from 105,000 to 145,000 acres. Louisiana acreage is increasing 21 percent, Florida is up 19 percent and Alabama grows 15 percent. Iowa’s prospective plantings are above the state’s five-year average for both corn and soybeans with 9.6 million acres of soybeans and 14 million corn acres. Its averages are 9.48 million and 13.86 million. Indiana’s 5.8 million corn acres are below its five-year average of 5.97 million acres, and its 5.5 million soybean acres are above the 5.3 million five-year average.
